16 Days of War: Tracking the US-Israel-Iran Conflict (2026)

The US-Israel war on Iran has entered its 17th day, with devastating consequences. This conflict has not only spread across a dozen countries but has also closed the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil artery, and resulted in over 2,300 deaths. The scale and impact of these attacks are unprecedented, and the world is watching with growing concern.

The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) has documented nearly 2,000 distinct events across 29 of Iran's 31 provinces, with Tehran bearing the brunt of the bombardments. The US and Israeli strikes have primarily targeted Iran's missile infrastructure, nuclear and military sites, as well as energy facilities, including oil depots and military sites on Kharg Island. The impact on civilian life has been catastrophic, with at least 18 hospitals and health facilities hit, and schools and residential areas severely damaged.

Iran's retaliatory attacks have been equally devastating. They have targeted several sites across Israel, as well as oil refineries, US military bases, airports, and commercial shipping across the six Gulf states. Iran has declared all US financial institutions and tech companies in the Middle East as justified targets, indicating a broader strategy of economic warfare. The conflict has also escalated in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, with Israel bombarding the latter daily and violating the October 10 ceasefire agreement.

The weapons used in this conflict are a testament to the advanced military capabilities of the US and Israel. The US has employed a range of long-range weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), the Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (LUCAS), MQ-9 Reaper drones, F/A-18 and F-35 aircraft, Patriot missile systems, and THAAD systems. Israel has used its air force of US-made advanced jets, as well as the Iron Dome and David's Sling missile defense systems.

Iran, in response, has utilized a combination of short- and medium-range ballistic missiles and one-way attack drones, particularly the cheap and mass-produced Shahed drones, which are difficult for radar to detect due to their low-altitude flight. Iran's missiles, such as the medium-range ballistic Shahab-3, can travel over 1,900km and have been deployed against Israel and used to attack energy infrastructure in the Gulf states.

This conflict raises profound questions about the nature of modern warfare, the role of technology, and the impact on civilian populations. The world is watching, and the consequences of this war will be felt for generations to come. As an expert commentator, I find it deeply concerning that the US and Israel have chosen to escalate tensions with Iran, risking further instability in the region and beyond. The international community must act to de-escalate this crisis and prevent further loss of life.
